Banská Štiavnica – UNESCO
Banská Štiavnica is a historic free royal mining town in central Slovakia with a significant multicultural past. It is known for metal mining (especially silver), important mining legislation, self-government and academic tradition. The town has been a town monument reserve since 1950 and at the same time the center of the protected landscape area Štiavnické vrchy declared on September 22, 1979 on an area of 77,630 ha. On December 11, 1993, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List as the "historic town of Banská Štiavnica and the technical monuments of its surroundings".
